Community Works Campaign Kicks Off November 1st10 Local Nonprofits to Benefit from Donors’ Generosity
Vassar is gearing up to help some local agencies make the community a better place. November 1 marks the kickoff of the college’s annual Community Works campaign, which raises funds for a rotating roster of local non-profit organizations. Now in its 18th year, Community Works has provided more than $1 million in grants to more than 50 groups since its inception.
All organizations that receive Community Works funding must have a 501(c)(3) legal status and agree to adhere to Vassar’s non-discrimination policy. This year’s Community Works recipients are:
- Arts Mid-Hudson, a Poughkeepsie-based agency that supports local artists and makers and hosts arts programs, performances and exhibits
- Exodus Transitional Community, which provides substance abuse services, housing assistance, training and employment information for youth and adults affected by the criminal justice system
- Hudson River Housing’s Liberty Station, which provides housing for local veterans
- Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, a local animal shelter
- Mid Hudson Aquatics, a nonprofit organization that offers low-cost swimming instruction and competition
- Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, a Poughkeepsie-based agency, founded and staffed by Vassar alumnae/i and students, that provides support to local immigrants and other low-income families
- People’s Place, a food pantry and thrift store in Kingston
- R.E.A.L. Skills Network, Inc., (Relationship Empowerment Affirmation Leadership), which provides academic and recreational programs for at-risk youth in Poughkeepsie
- Ulster Literacy Association, which provides one-on-one tutoring and literacy classes in Ulster County
- Victim Services of Family Services, Inc., which provides support to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault and their families.
This year’s goal is $75,000. Everyone in the Vassar Community will be receiving an email explaining how to make a donation, and Community Works volunteers will be on hand at the Benefits Fair. Additional information may be found at Community Works, or by contacting Tracy Sutherland, 2019 Chair of Community Works, at communityworks@vassar.edu.
