The migration of millions of African American families from the Deep South to northern cities in the first half of the 20th century is one of the most significant, and largely untold, stories of American history. On Saturday, February 16, harpist and Adjunct Artist in Music Ashley Jackson will relate this story, through music and the spoken word, in the performance Miss Black America.

The Hispanic Heritage Committee of Poughkeepsie recognized Jennifer Rubbo, Manager of the Environmental Cooperative for Strategic Planning and Academic Resources, for the college’s collaboration with the group over the past three years. Rubbo received one of seven Community Service Awards presented by the group Nov. 10 at the Alumnae/i House.

Xiaoyuan “Charlene” Ren ’13 is proving that Vassar alumnae/i can make a major impact in their field just a few years after they graduate. Ren is founder and director of MyH2O, an organization that monitors water quality throughout China. At Fall Convocation, the AAVC (Alumnae/i Association of Vassar College) recognized Ren’s remarkable accomplishments by presenting her with the Young Alumnae/i Achievement Award.

Members of the congregation of Vassar Temple of Poughkeepsie joined with members of the college’s Jewish community on Monday to cast bread crumbs on the waters of Sunset Lake. A component of Rosh Hashanah dating back to the Middle Ages, the service symbolized the release of mistakes and shortcomings from the past year.
