Vassar hosted the fourth annual Women of Color Conference, sponsored by the Consortium on High Achievement and Success (CHAS), in early March, bringing participants from 13 colleges and universities to campus for three days of reflection, networking, and workshops on the theme of (Re)defining Women of Color: Raising our Voices, Sharing our Stories.

Every year, the Office of International Services and the Vassar International Students Association cohost one of the most vibrant events of the fall semester—Kaleidoscope. A celebration of Vassar’s cultural diversity, Kaleidoscope features international cuisine, a dessert contest, a flag ceremony, and a talent show.

Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful storm to make landfall in Haiti in decades, left an estimated 1.4 million people in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Three Vassar student organizations—the Haiti Project, the Caribbean Students Alliance, and Jewett House—collaborated on a traditional Caribbean Christmas dinner to raise money for the relief effort.

Start with some flour, sugar, salt, eggs, yeast, vegetable oil and water. Add cheese or chives, garlic or cinnamon, apples or raspberries, or maybe some marshmallows or chocolate chips. Stir in a healthy serving of social consciousness, and what have you got? Vassar’s chapter of Challah for Hunger, a nationwide student group that’s been baking to fight poverty for more than a decade.
