Fourteen first-year students got a jump on their college careers this summer as members of the Summer Immersion in the Liberal Arts program sponsored by Vassar’s Engaged Pluralism Initiative (EPI). The young men and women, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, spent four weeks on campus taking specially designed, credit-bearing courses, learning about resources the college offers, and taking part in service-based learning in the Poughkeepsie area.

Working under the auspices of Vassar’s Undergraduate Research Summer Institute, George Whiteside ’18 and Dylan Horowitz ‘19 adapted an impulsivity test so that it can be administered not only on smart phones but also on smart watches and voice-activated virtual assistant devices such as Google Assistant.

Under the auspices of Vassar’s Ford Scholars program, Gabriela Mandeville ’19 and Hispanic Studies Prof. Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert traveled to St. Lucia and Dominica to talk to forest rangers, government officials, and others responsible for protecting the Amazon parrots that have made a comeback from the brink of extinction.
